Geography FAQ

Why is Earth called St. James?

When the Empire of Eboracum first made contact with Earth they contacted representatives of the United Kingdom who said they represented the Court of St. James. The royal court of the United Kingdom is known as the Court of St. James. Consequently Earth began to be referred to as
St. James and the usage subsequently spread.

What are Inside and Outside?

The Outside is a set of countless interconnected worlds, bounded by the Abyss. The Inside is a more recently created group of several hundred thousand interconnected worlds. The Inside is difficult to access from the outside because it is only connected to the Outside at a few points by Pilot Logrus. St James (aka Earth) is on the Outside.

What are Shadows?

Worlds that lack a significant power such as a Pattern or a Logrus are called Shadows.

What are some places that I might travel?

Because both Inside and Outside have thousands of worlds it is impractical to try and list all of them.
Outside destinations of note include Amber, Animus, Casablanca, Firegate, Murray, Rebma, Parys, Sanguine, Sarabann, Thelbane and many others. Inside destination of note include The Empire of Eboracum, The Federation, The Machine, The Reich, Sable, The Technocracy and many others.

I don’t have Pilot Logrus. How can I get from Outside to Inside and back?

You could hire a Pilot to transit you. Or you could travel to a Gateway World such as Casablanca, Murray, Sanguine or St James on the Outside and get transit there. You have to know where to go on the gateway world and the process involves a fair bit of standing around and waiting in queues.

What are ID bracelets?

Some worlds most notably those of the Empire of Eboracum and the Reich use
identification magics to keep track of Citizens and visitors. These magics are often designed as a bracelet which requires specialized abilities to remove. The Reich in particular requires every visitor to have a Bracelet and considers it a serious crime to tamper with one.

  1. Suggested Additions:

The Inside generally includes: Empire, Federation, Sable, Reich, Technocracy and Machine. (There are some new ones, my IC info is too incomplete to offer here, you may want to look into it.) Roland, Creator of the Empire, was the originator of the Inside according to schoolbook history taught in Eboricum (What the Empire calls itself when its at home.). The theory is that Roland wisely sought to isolate his Creation from the abuses he saw in his Amber-Chaos based relations and that Robert joined him in agreement, creating there as well. Roland took care to insulate and protect his Creation and has succeeded in preventing many ills from infesting the Inside for some time.

You may want to look into a definition of a “Gateway World”. It is important in terms of strategy, but I believe these are the anchor points between Inside and Outside. St. James is one such world, or was, last I had information on it.

Travel to the Machine is probably not adviseable. You may want to create a sort of travelers’ advisory list the way the State Department and the Home Office do for areas that are not considered safe for travel.

One of the big points of wearing the ID bracelets is to avoid Machine impersonations and infiltrators in fact. So visitors cheerily declaring an interest in visiting there might garner some attention in a not so good way. They are mandatory in the Empire as well.

There are political interdiction considerations as well and most pilots will not accept runs into the Federation unless it is a military or sanctioned mission of some kind.

If you are traveling with a pilot, you can expect to be subject to regulations. Certain substances and items are prohibited for transport. It is illegal to knowingly transport stolen goods. It is illegal to transport an Imperial slave without written permission of the owner. It is illegal to transport anyone against their will unless you are a duly constituted legal authority and they are a prisoner.

  2. Ok, as people seem inclined to be tight lipped, perhaps we can take this another way and spotlight the places that do not fall under a specific well known powers purview.

We all know there are places out in Shadow which for various reasons might be worth a visit, are significant for some reason or just not very well known.

The best example I can give (beyond St James) would be Edwardiana, where Sergei Koskov resides, but I am sure there are other places out there that people have simply come across.
